Student Access to Breakfast and After-School Supper Programs Expanded

HISD is making it easier for students to access meals by expanding opportunities for breakfast and after-school supper service. These programs are offered at no cost to families across all approved HISD campuses, helping more children start and end their school day with a nutritious meal.

HISD recognizes that many families may be experiencing increased financial strain due to recent disruptions in federal programs and services. By growing our meal programs and connecting families with vital resources, the District is working to help ease those challenges and ensure every child has what they need to learn, grow, and succeed.

Expanding Access to Breakfast

Beginning Monday, November 3, campuses will ensure that every student has the opportunity to enjoy breakfast upon arrival. Students who need a little extra time to eat may also take their breakfast to the classroom to finish. “Breakfast is one of the most important parts of a child’s day,” said Betti Wiggins, HISD Deputy Chief of Nutrition Services. “By creating more flexibility around breakfast service, we’re making sure students can start their mornings with a healthy meal and a positive mindset.”

After-School Supper Program Growth

Currently, 132 campuses participate in HISD’s After-School Supper Program, which complements the District’s after-school enrichment offerings. Beginning Wednesday, November 5, the program will expand to an additional 99 campuses that host enrichment activities but have not yet implemented the supper program. These meals may be served after the school day, helping students stay fueled and engaged during after-school programs.

Supporting Families and Communities

At any time, families may also visit any of the District’s eight Sunrise Centers across Houston, which provide weekly food distributions, access to clothes and other basic needs, and many other resources for HISD families who need support. These efforts are part of HISD’s ongoing commitment to supporting the whole child, ensuring students are nourished, focused, and ready to learn throughout the day.
